Right to be cynical

I have seen safety web sites put down and criticise so many aspects of safety and further confuse the safety sector by adding more over complication and trying to add more role obligations onto safety workers. It is only fair people have the chance to see the realist side of things.

This is that site.

I do not live in any dream world, I have nothing to sell, nor am I promoting any business tacts. What I do want is some sense put back in safety as too much has been taken out....in my opinion

The Art of Persuasion and humble enquiry (being sold in safety) are every con-persons genuineness. Humble enquiry and all other means to get people to buy things or believe in things is just plain manipulation. Anyone who disagrees is not ethical or just naive; as ethical people do not practice persuasion to sell ideas, and smart people do not endorse it, they practice moral advice that allows those to persuade themselves to a new way. Free chapters of books, free samples of systems, and all other tempters are all those things in which those who practice persuasion use to buy you, suck you in...wake up. Safety needs to get back to the basics first, as this first step has not been completed!

My view on Zero v Mature


Some experts promote ZERO harm as nonsense, this may be true collectively/total and in this context I agree. But zero harm can be achievable in many tasks we do and to prove this, many tasks are done with zero harm. 

But keeping this short and to the point about reaching a goal in context being promoted by some who do not support zero harm; if we cannot reach ZERO then a mindful/resilient organisation cannot be reached either. They are both framing risk and safety perfectionism. Being a mindful organisation/excellent/mature infers that one must be an organisation that pays attention to any failures. This thinking is an absolute and one which will be deeply problematic for establishing a culture of openness, reporting, respect, relationship, trust and learning. Any organization that thinks all (any) failures will be reported is just as naive as any person who thinks that every failure will be reported. 

Any failure is absolutely anything that may cause an event. Focusing on every failure then becomes a quest to control actions (determinism) that causes the failure so they won’t occur again…(that is the concept of preoccupation with failure). This thinking then implies that the focusing on all failures is going to give zero harm.  

This is in my view announcing a zero harm philosophy. So much effort seems to be getting put into this term and I don't know why.
Any promotion of a mature/mindful culture is nonsense as it assumes people and organisation are preoccupied with failure. This falls into the realm of Safety First and Zero discourse as it is expecting risk aversion. A organisation advertising they are Mature/mindful is promoting a false, it is impossible to focus on all failures, therefore it is impossible to be Mature.
